The mission of the Bridgeport Public Schools and its supporting community is to graduate all students "college ready" and
prepared to succeed in life.

The Board of Education congratulates Central freshman Aldrin McDonald and Harding sophomore Eunice Colon-Baretto for receiving the Perfect Attendance Laptop Awards at Monday’s Board of Education meeting.  Aldrin and Eunice were selected from a drawing to each receive a Dell laptop, which was presented by the Bridgeport Public Education Fund, for maintaining perfect attendance for the first half of the school year.

"The Bridgeport Public Education Fund was pleased to participate in the new back-to-school initiative this year,” said Marge Hiller, Executive Director of the Bridgeport Public Education Fund.  “We recognize that coming to school on the first day is a great way to start the school year.  However, it is even more important to be in school everyday.  Congratulations to Aldrin and Eunice for their perfect attendance, and to their supportive families for recognizing the achievement of their children."

As part of its Back to School Campaign, Bridgeport Public Schools announced at the beginning of the school year that this incentive would be offered to encourage an increase in school attendance.  All high school students who had perfect attendance for the first half of the 2007-08 school year were eligible to be entered into a drawing for one of two laptops donated by GE.

Great Expectations - A TV News Magazine about Bridgeport Public Schools - to Air in March

When Dr. John Ramos took over as Superintendent of the Bridgeport Public School system he said, “Expect Great Things."

In the few years since then progress is evident throughout the system. Now there is another powerful way to highlight the "great" things happening in the district in new monthly television news magazine show entitled: Great Expectations.

The show will be hosted by Gina Levon Simpson of the Parent Center along with the following high school student hosts:  Justin Flores, Bassick;  Ahlaam Abdul, Bassick; Rondique McLean, Harding; and  DaSheena Kenney, Harding; with special commentary by  Superintendent Dr. John J. Ramos.

Some of the show’s segments will feature: Principal’s corner, Parent chat, School  Feature and a monthly Student Profile.   The show will also be able to cover important performances, educational events, and much, much more!

The show is made possible by a  generous contribution from the Bridgeport Public Education Fund for the series and the show’s Producers have agreed to match that contribution with in-kind services through discounted production rates.

This is a true partnership which is a major component of the district’s Strategic Plan. Special thanks go to the Bridgeport Board Education Fund, Dick Ferguson, The Bridgeport Board of Education, Borres Productions, Bridgeport Students Productions, and Sound View Community Media.

Stay tuned for Great Expectations to air the Education Access Channel 78 – Mornings @ 9 a.m. and every evening at 9 p.m., except on Wednesdays.  Plus, you can also tune in to Channel 77, the Public Access channel, every Tuesday @ 10 p.m. Premiere airdate to be determined, so please read upcoming issues of Great News for more information or visit www.bridgeportedu.com.

Greetings from the Communications Department

In my first week as your new Communications Director, I am encouraged more than ever about the ‘great things’ happening throughout the Bridgeport Public School System.

On Monday morning, I met many devoted and concerned parents at Classic Studies Academy. The topic of the day was re-districting, but before we got to down to business we were serenaded by several talented students in the band and choir. On Tuesday, I learned that the BPS website was voted one of the top ten public school websites in the nation by 'Want To Teach.com', thanks to the wonderful work of MartinB, LLC and our IT department. And yesterday, I joined the Superintendent as he shared with principals and teachers at John Winthrop School. The energy and enthusiasm in the room at John Winthrop was absolutely contagious. This experience in the classroom reminded me that it was a teacher’s creative practices in my classroom and a guidance counselors’ genuine interest in me which sparked my interest in journalism and the media. Teachers do make a difference. Thank you!

What I have learned in my first week? The district’s most valuable resource is its people. I look forward to meeting many of you and continuing to share your ‘great news’ through emails, newsletters, and other media outlets throughout the state.

I look forward to hearing from you at: vdouglas-givan@bridgeportedu.net or greatnews@bridgeportedu.net.

Take care and see you soon!

Veronica Douglas-Givan
Director of Communications

Farewell from the Jennifers

Dear Members of the Bridgeport Public Schools Community,

Today marks the last Great News email that Jennifer Sangeloty and I, Jennifer Bernheim, will write as public relations consultants for the school district.  We warmly welcome Veronica Douglas-Givan as the new Communications Director of Bridgeport Public Schools and are confident that she will continue to promote all of the “Great News” that BPS has to share.

Over the past year, we have had the privilege of working with a variety of Bridgeport’s outstanding teachers, students, administrators, and community supporters. We have experienced firsthand the progress and success of the school district and have gained a deeper appreciation for all of your hard work and dedication to education.  It has been a pleasure sharing this “great news” with you in the form of this email and the Great Expectations newsletter.  All in the Bridgeport Public Schools community have much to be proud of, and we have enjoyed publicizing the district’s many accomplishments.

We hope you have enjoyed these publications and will continue to support this arrangement by submitting your news to greatnews@bridgeportedu.net.  Thank you for your support in our efforts to promote a positive image for the district.

Best wishes to all for a successful spring semester as you continue to “Expect Great Things” in Bridgeport Public Schools!

Kindest Regards,

Jennifer Bernheim & Jennifer Sangeloty
