Marin School Celebrates the
Discovery of Puerto Rico

Luis Munoz Marin School held its annual Discovery of Puerto Rico Day  on November 8th in celebration of the discovery of Puerto Rico by Christopher Columbus on Nov. 19, 1493.

The festivities featured 40 guest speakers throughout Bridgeports supporting community. Following a brief welcome breakfast, the guest speakers visited classrooms to speak to students about their careers and the importance of striving for goals. They then joined the Marin staff for a Puerto Rico Style Luncheon featuring live music and dancing by Marin seventh and eighth graders.

This event focused on the positive role models that are direct products of the Bridgeport Public School System, said Bianca Rivera, event coordinator and chairperson for Marins Diversity Task Force.  It gave the students the opportunity to speak directly to bilingual professionals, many whom have turned their second language acquisition into an advantage for their careers rather than a hindrance.  Students were encouraged to continue their education and pursue fulfilling goals right in their home community of Bridgeport, just as many of the speakers have."

Guest speakers included professionals from a variety of backgrounds such as firefighters, teachers, lawyers, doctors, and police officers. Supervisor of Bilingual Education Yvette DeFeo, Bridgeport Police Officer William Miranda and Fire Captain Ismael Pomales were among the celebrations guests.  Many of these professionals graduated from Bridgeport Public Schools.

The following article was featured in the Nov. 19th edition of the CT Post

In 14 kindergarten classrooms this fall, students are chanting the phrase as they clap and snap their fingers to a beat.

"There is a high correlation between keeping a steady beat and being able to read," whispered Mary Beth Stickley, the district's director of early childhood education, while watching a Cesar Batalla School classroom.

In a nearby first grade one of two first grades this year using the "Total Learning" approach an echo is heard, driving home the "th" sound to first-graders.
