Beardsley School Adds Caribbean Flair to Potluck Dinner

Last week, Beardsley School held its first Caribbean Night: Cultural Gathering and Potluck Dinner for Beardsley students, parents, and staff.  The dinner provided fire safety information to families and celebrated the Caribbean culture of students with Puerto Rican, Dominican, Jamaican, Haitian, and Cuban backgrounds.

The celebration included student dance performances and featured Cosmic Jibaros, a Bridgeport-based Latin rock band.  Beardsley Principal Amy Marshall and City Council Woman Maria Valle, Beardsley’s Home School Coordinator and Caribbean Night co-coordinator, were among those in attendance. This event was sponsored by the Beardsley Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and staff.

“We are always looking for a way to get more families into the school,” said Elizabeth Moran, Beardsley teacher and Caribbean Night co-coordinator.  “It was a time for Beardsley staff, parents and students to get together in a relaxing, positive atmosphere and form better lasting relationships.”

Cosmic Jibaros started in Black Rock in 1999.  The seven member band plays to the Latin and Caribbean rhythms and specializes in traditional bomba beats, congas and timbales, which are Latin percussion instruments.

When 186-pupil Webster School closes in June, Principal Marlene A. Roberts will pack up and move two blocks down North Avenue to become principal of the brand-new, yet-to-be-named, North End school.
