Madison Students Play the Stock Market

Joann Briganti’s 5th grade class at Madison School recently participated in the state-wide Stock Market Game.  The Stock Market Simulation (SMS) is a new online financial literacy program endorsed by the Connecticut Newspaper in Education Council and the Connecticut Post.

Students competed in teams against other elementary schools for 10 weeks.  Each team had $100,000 to invest. According to the SMS website (www.ConnecticutSMS.com), this game helps students to:
  • Learn how our economic system works
  • Analyze how news events influence local, national, and international markets
  • Strengthen computer and Internet skills
  • Work together and make decisions in teams
  • Enjoy participating in the statewide competition
A team from Mrs. Briganti’s class won first place in the elementary division.  Congratulations to all Madison participants! For more information about the Connecticut Post Stock Market Simulation, visit www.ConnecticutSMS.com.

Garfield Student Receives Award in Memory of Principal Reed

Congratulations to George John, Jr., recipient of the Howard W. Reed, J.D. Memorial Award.  George, a sixth grade Garfield student, received a $50 cash award for showing the most improvement throughout the school year.  He received the award at the annual sixth grade Promotions Exercise.

This award was presented in memory of former Garfield principal Howard Reed, who passed away in October. Those in attendance at the awards ceremony included Reed’s family and members of his church.  Garfield School hopes to make this an annual award.

Webster School: A "School of Hope" With Volunteers Who Share Their Time, Talent and Love

Excerpt from the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County

Grandparents – those wonderful people who love us unconditionally, who provide us comfort in times of need, and who do everything in their power to ensure that our needs our met. They do indeed have a critical role in our lives as they share with us the “strength and wisdom that time and experience have given them.”

Youngsters at Webster School are very lucky. When they arrive at school, they have some very special “grandparents” to welcome them. Known as “Grandpals,” they are a diverse group of individuals with a common passion: They love children and are enthusiastic about helping them to learn and grow.

Research indicates that the role grandparents play in the lives of grandchildren transcends biological bonds and that the special union between the younger and older generations can easily be replicated between totally unrelated individuals. United Way of Eastern Fairfield County is delighted that the Child Guidance Center’s Foster Grandparent Program, which cultivates this relationship and offers so many benefits to youngsters and senior citizens alike, is taking place at one of our three Schools of Hope…
