Superintendent Dr. Ramos dicussed Strategic Plan 2012

The Bridgeport Public Schools’ Education Forum, featuring Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John J. Ramos, Sr., Ed.D., was held on Tuesday from 7:45-9:30 a.m. at the Bridgeport Holiday Inn. Educators, administrators, students, community members and business leaders from around Bridgeport attended.
Keynote speaker Superintendent Dr. Ramos discussed “The Bridgeport Board of Education’s Strategic Plan for Academic Achievement.” All attendees received a copy of the Executive Summary of the Strategic Plan. A short documentary featuring student interviews was also shown at the event.
“The Strategic Plan, which was unanimously adopted by the Board of Education on April 9, will be the guiding force for the Bridgeport Public Schools for the next five years, making great things happen for all students,” Dr. Ramos said. “Our plan is unique, because the community has publicly and clearly accepted responsibility for making the Strategic Plan a success.”
Other speakers at the Education Forum included Wiley Mullins, Chairman of the Bridgeport Public Education Fund Community Outreach Committee; Paul Timpanelli, President and CEO of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council; and Anne Gribbon of the School Volunteer Office. The Education Forum was sponsored by The Bridgeport Public Education Fund, in partnership with The School Volunteer Association, The Bridgeport Child Advocacy Coalition and The Bridgeport Regional Business Council. The event was underwritten by AT&T, Aquarion Water Company, and The Community’s Bank.

Yesterday business and community leaders spent the morning in Bridgeport’s public schools as Principals for a Day. Each participant shadowed a principal and had the opportunity to interact with students and staff, giving them an inside look into both the successes and challenges facing Bridgeport Public Schools.
According to Anne Gribbon of the School Volunteer Association, “The Principal for a Day event is intended to raise awareness of critical issues facing public education in Bridgeport. Through spending time in Bridgeport schools, participants will gain firsthand knowledge of the varied administrative aspects of leading city schools.”
“Guest Principals” spent time in the classrooms in order to engage both students and teachers and also shared information about their company and career. As business and community leaders, the “Guest Principals” examined the students’ work and provided practical classroom strategies for students. They also addressed important management issues, such as budgeting and goal setting, with administrators.
One of the day’s “Guest Principals” was Mary Jane Foster, CEO of the Bridgeport Bluefish. “I feel so privileged to have spent the morning at the Columbus School. There is the most extraordinary energy that permeates the building. You can feel it the minute you walk in the door,” she said. “From the ‘real’ principal, Manny Rocha to each and every teacher and staff member I met, the commitment to the students was clear and inspiring. The many students I met are engaging and engaged. I was impressed by the depth and breadth of the questions they asked me and their curiosity about their wider community. I can't wait to be invited back.”
