Central Senior's Talent Awarded $52,000 College ScholarshipMichelle Huynh poses with her artwork at
Hartford Art School's Silpe Gallery.
On Sunday, Central High School senior Michelle Huynh received the Golden Key award at the Scholastic Art Awards ceremony held at the University of Hartford’s Lincoln Theater. She was also awarded a $52,000 four-year scholarship to Hartt School at the University of Hartford.
"When I first knew I receiving the award I was overjoyed to know that people acknowledged the overall quality, importance, and love that I have for my work," Huynh said. "When I received the scholarship I knew that this was an opportunity for me to pursue what I love without having to worry much about my financial status."
Michelle submitted 8 original artworks in her Scholastic Art Awards portfolio, which were displayed at the Silpe Gallery at Hartford Art School. She is the only Central High School student chosen to participate in Scholastic Art Awards’ national competition, where she will compete for further recognition and additional scholarship money.
“As Michelle’s studio arts teacher for the past four years, I can attest that she has worked very hard and is deserving of both the award and the scholarship,” Fern Grama, Central art teacher, said.
In the future, Michelle plans to put her artistic talents to practice as an architect. "I want to be the mind behind an eye-catching piece of art that is functional yet part of the ever-changing world of design," she explained.
The Board of Education congratulates Michelle for her outstanding achievement as she continues to “Expect Great Things” both academically and artistically.

As the servers hurried nervously from table to table, making sure each piece of silverware was in its proper place, they couldn't help but chatter excitedly about their first big event. Then, fellow sixth-graders emerged from the kitchen, taking a break from preparing the Thursday luncheon of French onion soup, chicken francaise with artichokes, rice and chocolate mousse.
The skills exhibited by the student chefs and serving crew were honed through an enrichment program established between their school, the city's Classical Studies Academy, and the Watermark at 3030 Park retirement community.

100-year-old School Holds Many Memories
--By Linda Conner Lambeck, Connecticut Post

A black-and-white photo of an 11-year-old Barnie Cadzin, attached to a blue student record card, was stuck for nearly a century in an old filing cabinet, along with hundreds of other pieces of history in the basement storage room of the soon-to-be demolished McKinley School.
It's dated 1919.
