Bpt Athletes Support RIF ProgramBPS recently began its first Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) book distribution for the year. This year’s theme this was “Bridgeport’s Athletes Support RIF” kick off. Over 20,000 books were distributed throughout the district.
RIF is the oldest and largest children’s and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. In its goal to prepare and motivate children to read, the program delivers 16 million new, free books and literacy resources to 4.5 million children each year.
At High Horizons and Classical Studies Academy athletic teams read and spoke to students. Francine Carbone, High Horizons literacy coach invited Coach Charles Bentley and his Harding High School basketball team to visit and read together. “What a sight to see these nice young men & women sitting down and reading with Bridgeport’s little readers,” said Deborah Orifice, BPS Reading Consultant.
Kathy Feller, Classical Studies Academy literacy coach brought together the Fairfield University soccer team with CSA students. The soccer players spoke to the students about soccer and the importance of reading both in playing soccer and being able to stay in school and succeed.
BPS students are finding new ways to achieve “Great Things” and have fun reading with the help of Bridgeport’s talented athletes.

Central Leads the Way with DonorsChoose.org
Central High School chemistry students make presentations
based on the resources they received from DonorsChoose.org.
-- The following is a message submitted by Thalia Theodore, Northeast Deputy Director for DonorsChoose.org:
"I am very excited to report that Bridgeport has surpassed the $100,000 mark in resources delivered to Bridgeport classrooms! This is really, really wonderful. In particular, I want to highlight Central High School where nearly 50 teachers have registered, 25 proposals have been fully funded, and the school has earned $11,500 in resources!”
Jessica Gregory, Central chemistry teacher, is one of the teachers whose proposal has been fully funded. Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, her students received much needed resource books just before covering a unit on the history of the atom. Students used their new resources to create a presentation on the history of the atom from the perspective of Democritus.
“DonorsChoose was a very simple process, and helped me buy resources for my chemists that I otherwise would not have been able to provide,” Gregory said. “My chemists are amazing young adults; just beginning to see that they can love chemistry, that it doesn't have to be ‘hard’ and these books can help them find their talents instead of struggling to find information.”
Congratulations to Central High School and all the Bridgeport teachers that have and continue to receive funding from DonorsChoose.org.
Visit www.DonorsChoose.org to submit your next proposal and keep the funding success going!
Cartoons Draw on Harding Memories
--By Linda Conner Lambeck, Connecticut Post
This article was feature on Page 1 of the Dec. 20 edition of the CT Post
Terry Sutherland considered it a shot in the dark when she called Laura MacQuarrie, the librarian at Harding High School looking for a series of cartoons her father had once penned when he was a student there.
Some 67 years have passed since Joe Bevacqua, who was named "The Class Artist" of his 1940 graduating class, had his work printed in the school newspaper, The Harding Spectator.
But Sutherland, a Trumbull resident who taught math for a short time at Harding, knew the school has not moved or had a serious fire since it was built in 1926, so copies of the student newspaper dating back many years might still exist.
