Beardsley 6th Graders Ride in Style
to the Maritime Aquarium

Last month, Beardsley School’s teachers donated funds to award nine sixth grade students for excellent behavior with a special field trip to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk.   Regency Limo transported students to the aquarium, where they toured the facility and viewed a film in the IMAX theatre.  This trip was part of an “excellent behavior” program the teachers instituted at the beginning of the second marking period.

“So often, we all focus on the negative aspects of education and the ‘problems’ that arise on a daily basis.  This was an opportunity to showcase the talent that often gets overlooked,” said Dawn Schirizzo, Beardsley sixth grade teacher and field trip chaperone.

The sixth grade Beardsley teachers created a behavior point system in which each of their 90 students receives 100 points at the beginning of the marking period. Students must follow set criteria in order to keep these points.  The criteria include being prepared for class, completing homework assignments, being respectful, and following the rules in the classroom.  Students must deduct one point each time they choose not to meet the criteria.  The nine students receiving the field trip have maintained all 100 points for the entire marking period.

All Beardsley sixth graders started over with another 100 points and the opportunity to be rewarded for their excellent behavior for the third semester.

Bassick Hosts Academy Week

Bassick High School’s Small Learning Communities Executive Board recently hosted Academy Week in recognition of the student members of the school’s Career Academies, which include the Arts and Media Academy, Business and Finance Academy, Government and Human Services Academy, and Science and Technology Academy.

“The goal of our Career Academies program is not so much to prepare students for jobs in a particular career, but to help students begin to think about their post-high school goals, which should include furthering their education,” said Ronald Remy, Bassick Principal.

Approximately 300 Bassick juniors and seniors have taken elective courses in the Career Academy of their choice.  Each Academy held its celebratory reception on a different day between January 29 and February 1.  All Career Academy students received certificates and polo shirts with embroidered academy logos in honor of their hard work.

Academy Week guest speakers included the following: Bunmi Asaolu, Afrim Mustafa, and Emmanuel Ephie, Bassick graduates and current college students; John Fabrizi, former Mayor; Frank Adjisegbe, Executive Director of Higher Education and Responsibility through Overseas Exchange (HEROE); and Dr. Marian Evans, Director of the Bridgeport Department of Health.

--The following media release was published by the SMART Technologies  public relations department

SMART Technologies announces that the Bridgeport Public Schools is outfitting four of its schools with more than 200 SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards. This installation supplements hundreds of SMART Board interactive whiteboards already present in Bridgeport’s 38 schools. After considering several different brands, Coretta K. Dean, Bridgeport Public Schools’ director of educational technology, chose SMART because the products offer a superior user experience and because the company supports teaching and learning with training and digital resources. Including Bridgeport, 93 percent of Connecticut’s school districts have purchased SMART products since 2000.
