Back to School in Style

Limo ride winners smile with Chief of Staff Mr. Henry and
Superintendent Dr. Ramos.

As part Bridgeport Public Schools’ Back to School Campaign, 13 students were escorted to school today for the first day of school. These students were selected at random among a qualifying group of students who had perfect attendance throughout the 2006-07 school year.  Students and their parents met at Bridgeport City Hall at 7 a.m.  Following a brief breakfast reception, Superintendent Dr. John J. Ramos and Chief of Staff Robert Henry escorted students to their respective schools in limos generously provided by Connecticut Limo.

Students and adults alike were excited about the limo rides.  “When I found out that I was riding to school in a limo I was so excited I almost did a back flip! I’m so happy,” said High Horizons seventh grader Peter Barnaba.  Tiana Sheldon, who is attending her first year at Cesar Batalla, agrees.  “I’m excited because I’m going to a new school, and I never thought I’d get to go to school in a limo,” she said.  Parents and guardians expressed enthusiasm for the event as well.  “I can’t believe this.  This is great,” said Danny Colson, grandfather of Bryant student Jaden Melendez.  “We have worked with him very hard and are proud of his accomplishments.”

Dr. Ramos and Mr. Henry were pleased to serve as chaperones for this event.  “This is truly a tribute to the students for all of their hard work,” said Dr. Ramos.  “It is also a testimony to the parents and guardians who make sure their students come to school every day.”

“The first day of school is always an exciting and busy day, and it is a very special day for these lucky young ones,” said Mr. Henry.  “The ride today is not just a token gesture, but an important symbol that attendance counts!”

Bridgeport Public Schools seeks to reward students for their hard work and encourage them to continue to strive for academic excellence.  The limo ride is one of the many ways in which the Board of Education hopes to help students have a positive outlook on school attendance.  “I think it’s terrific that [the Board of Education] is putting the time and effort into rewarding these kids,” said parent Marybeth Watson.  “This gives children a good incentive to go to school,” said parent Maria Rua, whose older son is now encouraged to attend school in order to have the opportunity to participate in future perfect attendance activities.

The Bridgeport Board of Education extends a special thanks to Connecticut Limo for helping make this special event possible.

Additionally, in conjunction with the Back to School Campaign, five students were selected to win one of five $25 gift cards from JCPenney and four students were selected to win one of four backpacks, also donated by JCPenney.  Perfect attendance initiatives for the 2007-08 school year include a Sound Tigers family pack of tickets for each student who has perfect attendance the first 90 days of school and at the high school level, any student who has perfect attendance the first 90 days will be entered to win one of three laptops, which were donated by the GE Company.
