GREAT EXPECTATIONS Healthy Minds - Healthy Bodies Day
Celebrating the students of Columbus School for reading 24,000 Books!
Book Parade & Community celebration Friday, May 30th from 9am until 3pm
Mr. Rocha is on top of the world!

Mr. Rocha, principal of Columbus School is on top of the world and excited his students exceeded his goal. "I challenged my students to read 20,000 books as we prepared for the CMT's. They met that challenge and didn't stop reading, said Mr. Rocha.
The Hollow section of town is gearing up for a parade, a 'book parade' in fact, with a special event entitled: “Great Expectations -- Healthy Minds and Healthy Bodies Day”! This community celebration sponsored by Community Health Network of Connecticut and a host of other partners is a party with a purpose, to congratulate the students of Columbus School for reading 24,000 books. Jackie Buster, director marketing and community affairs of Community Health Network said she was honored to work with the Bridgeport Public Schools to help give the students of Columbus School a day to remember. “When the director of communications told us about the reading challenge at Columbus School , we immediately said yes to this partnership. This collaboration is aligned with our community awareness campaign called: Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies and the district’s overall mission. The campaign is also an initiative to promote awareness to kids and families about the importance of eating healthy and leading active lifestyles.”
Last September, Mr. Rocha, the principal of Columbus School challenged his students to read 20,000 books in preparation for the CMT's. Rocha, purchased a special computer program which tracked all the books the students read and one year later the students can proudly say they have surpassed the goal. " Columbus School serves as a beacon of hope for the cultural tapestry of families living in Bridgeport ’s Hollow Community. Columbus school educates 800 Pre-K through 6th grade students who are primarily multi-lingual. Columbus school has demonstrated substantial, meaningful change in attitudes, beliefs and values over the past five years. Teaching practices and classroom instruction have also dramatically changed to substantially affect academic growth. Guided by well trained staff, and supported by committed parents the diverse blend of cultures in the school is recognized, appreciated and celebrated," said Mr. Rocha.
Fifth grade student Andrea Rojas said she can’t wait for the special day. "Everyone is talking about it. It was fun challenging ourselves. Our teachers made it fun and we also answered questions about the books we read. Reading is fun. We couldn't wait to get another book," said 5th grade student Andrea Rojas.
Superintendent Dr. Ramos is joining the staff, students and parents for tomorrow's book parade and leading the pack along with the Harding High School Marching Band and Bridgeport's finest and bravest. “When you expect great things from students you get these kinds of results. Columbus School is one example of the excellence in our district and I want to personally thank all of the sponsors and community organizations for investing in our students,” said Dr. Ramos.
