FOSS Program

Full Option Science System

FOSS springs from a philosophy of learning at Lawrence Hall of Science that has guided the development of “successful” active learning science curricula for more than twenty five years. Teachers and students engage in enduring experiences that lead to a profound understanding of scientific concepts.

Superintendent stands with grade two teachers from various Bridgeport schools during the FOSS science training. Dr. John Ramos expressed his support and adulation towards the teachers and the Science Department. The FOSS program emphasizes the fact that “science is an active enterprise, made active by our human capacity to think.” The training is preparing teachers in grades one through five to deliver in depth science instruction.

Bridgeport Board of Education First Grade Teachers

FOSS is a project dedicated to improving the learning and teaching of science. The FOSS program is designed to meet the challenge of providing meaningful science education for all students and continues to be guided by advances in the understanding of how youngsters think and learn. The best way for students to appreciate the scientific enterprise, learn important scientific concepts, and develop the ability to think critically is to actively construct ideas through their own inquiries, investigations, and analyses. The FOSS program was created to engage students in these processes as they explore the natural world. Hands-on science is intrinsically fun and interesting for students. And most teachers can be superb science teachers when they are provided with effective instructional materials. FOSS is designed to make hands-on science engaging for teachers as well as students.
