Test Scores Show Bridgeport Public School Students

Striving for Academic Excellence

Bridgeport Public School students are continuing to accomplish great things, evident by their recent strong gains in academic improvement. Overall district scores have gone up over 5% in literacy and 10% in math on the CMT’s – in fact, the special education subgroup scores went up over 12%! Additionally, five schools reached Safe Harbor:Waltersville, Cross, Madison, Beardsley, Classical Studies Academy. This indicates gains of 10 points (among the lowest achieving students) by NCLB standards. Five schools also made the AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) standard: Winthrop, Hall, Park City Magnet, Multicultural Magnet, High Horizons Magnet. Students in grades 6-8 showed the most significant gains district-wide.

Cynthia Fernandes, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, credits the collaborative effort from various departments at the school level and the community for the positive outcomes. “Work by content area directors on curriculum, as well as the department of evaluation and research’s instruction to principals, teachers, and parents on the use of data are reasons for the across the board gains.”

On the high school level, Bassick and Harding have some great news to share. Bassick High School is Connecticut's only CommPACT high school, and Harding High School is in the midst of a transition by becoming the only re-start project in the state.

Students of the 2010-2011 year will also be able to reap the benefits from the efforts of last year. Administrators will continue to implement “User Friendly Fashion” presentations that create a deeper understanding of the CMT test, its components, and how close each student is to achieving proficiency or goal. This work will continue the utilization of the “Drill Down” Approach to analyze and address each student’s individual needs.

And because of its success in strengthening students’ academic skills during the 2009-2010 school year, this multi-step approach leaves administrators feeling optimistic for a similar outcome this year. “We look forward to continuing our work with data, curriculum, and instructional practice during the 2010-11 school year,” continues Cynthia Fernandes.

Dr. John J. Ramos, Sr. Superintendent, said, “We are seeing positive results across the board due to the consistent work of our staff while empowering our scholars and our parents to get a better understanding of individual student data.  This work will intensify and continue for the 2010-11 school year. I am proud of our scholars and all of those who serve them each day!”

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

This year's theme recognizes “Heritage, Diversity, Integrity and Honor: The Renewed Hope of America.” Schools throughout the district will make a cultural sojourn during Hispanic Heritage Month through a variety of exciting avenues.

CT Beardsley Zoo Hosts Family Friendly

Health Fair

Scholars and members of the Bridgeport community enjoyed a day full of fun, excitement, and learning at the Healthy Families, Healthy Communities Free Family Health Fair hosted by Connecticut Beardsley Zoo. On Saturday, September 11, the health fair, sponsored by Optimus Health Care, Henry Schein, Inc., Quinnipiac University and Sacred Heart University, offered free family health screenings. These screenings were designed to identify risk factors and undiagnosed diseases such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. The free screenings included: height, weight, hand washing, dental, blood pressure, glucose, nutrition, and BMI (Body Mass Index).

Several BPS students and their families were in attendance, participating in face painting, as well as testing their throwing skills by attempting to hit the bulls-eye on a dunking box (provided by Wireless Wizard). Meanwhile, for the book savvy, the Bridgeport Public Library's Book Mobile offered a variety of free books for children to choose from and take home. The children also toted home free book bags.

Marin School Alum Elected

as the First Latino President of the

Fairfield University Student Association

Marin School Alum and Fairfield University Junior Edwin Muniz beat opponent Kyle Duggan by nearly 300 votes to become the 64th president of the Fairfield University Student Association (FUSA) back in February.

Muniz, Fairfield's first AHANA president, is not a veteran of student government, but began to recognize and fulfill his passion for student activities and organizations during his freshman year by becoming a class senator. He has been involved with organizations such as Cura Personalis and Academic Immersion, sometimes in leadership roles, throughout his years at Fairfield University.

Muniz has a couple of key goals for FUSA next year. One is to increase the student body's awareness of FUSA's initiatives by better marketing the goals of the association. In addition, he would like to see an increase in transportation both on campus and off campus by introducing programs and partnerships with companies like Hertz. Muniz's goal is to provide more transportation options for students, particularly first and second year students, to get off campus.

Muniz started mapping out his own presidential legacy this past summer, while working on FUSA programs and activities long before the students moved back into their residence halls. He will have the experience and support of FUSA Vice President Lauren Johnson '11 who begins her second term this fall.

Muniz said, "I want to stay visible to the students and make myself as accessible as possible."
